Retail Industry Award – Changes to Penalty Rates for Casuals

On 1 October 2019, the penalty rates for casuals employed under the General Retail Industry Award 2010 will change.

These latest changes are a continuation of the “phasing in” of changes made to the award as a result of a decision regarding penalty rates for casuals handed down by the Fair Work Commission in September 2018.

From 1 October 2019, the penalty rates for casuals (other than shift workers) will change for evening work and Saturday work to the following:

  • Evening Work (Monday to Friday) – 135% of the applicable base rate
  • Saturday Work – 145% of the applicable base rate

We advise all employers within the Retail Industry to check their payroll and timekeeping systems to ensure the correct rates are paid are required by these changes.

We recommend that employers download and update on a regular basis payguides for this award and other awards applicable to their business. A copy of the latest payguide for the General Retail Industry Award 2010 can be found at http://awardviewer.fwo.gov.au/award/downloadsummary/G0047409

Employers should note that additional changes to the General Retail Industry Award will also be applicable from 1 March 2020. Please contact us for more information.
